Kids Braids in Harlem

Braiding a child's hair is a different job from braiding an adult's, and it should be treated that way. Young hairlines are delicate, attention spans are short, and a style that hurts teaches a child to dread the chair.

About kids braids

Braiding a child's hair is a different job from braiding an adult's, and it should be treated that way. Young hairlines are delicate, attention spans are short, and a style that hurts teaches a child to dread the chair.

We braid children gently, keep sections at a size their density can carry, take breaks, and finish with styles that survive school, sport and sleepovers without needing daily attention.

Why clients choose it

  • Patient, unhurried braiding with breaks when they are needed
  • Light tension suited to young, developing hairlines
  • School-ready styles that last the week without re-doing
  • Beads, colour and fun finishes children actually choose themselves
  • Shorter appointment times wherever the style allows

Who this style suits

All ages and hair textures, from a toddler's first cornrows to a teenager's first knotless set. If your child is very young or nervous, tell us when you book and we will plan the appointment around them.

How to prepare your hair

  • Wash and detangle at home the day before — this saves the most chair time
  • Dry the hair fully
  • Feed your child beforehand and bring snacks and water
  • Bring a tablet, headphones or a book
  • Choose a style together in advance so there are no surprises

Maintenance

  • A satin bonnet or pillowcase from night one
  • Light moisture on the scalp twice a week
  • Re-tie beads if they loosen rather than letting them pull
  • Keep styles to a comfortable length — long and heavy is not for young hair
  • Take the style down on time; children's hair should not carry a set for months

How long it lasts

Cornrows and beaded styles usually last two to four weeks on children. Medium knotless braids can hold longer, but we generally advise taking children's styles down sooner rather than later.

Questions about kids braids

What age do you braid from?

We braid children of all ages, adapting the style and appointment length to what they can comfortably sit through.

Will it hurt my child?

It should not. We braid at light tension and stop if a child is uncomfortable. Please tell us right away if your child says something is tight.

Can siblings be braided in the same visit?

Often yes, depending on the styles and the day. Call ahead so we can allow enough time.
