Caring For Your Braids

Protective styling only protects when it is prepared, worn and removed properly. This is the routine we give every client who leaves our Harlem chair.

Before your appointment

  • Wash and condition your hair one or two days before, then dry it completely — braiding damp hair traps moisture and weakens the braid.
  • Detangle thoroughly from the ends up. Stretched or blow-dried hair braids faster and sits flatter at the root.
  • Skip heavy butters, gels and greases on the day; a light leave-in is all you need.
  • Bring a reference photo, eat beforehand and wear a low neckline so your hairline is easy to reach.

The first week

  • Some settling is normal; pain is not. If a section stings, tell us and we will loosen it rather than letting you live with it.
  • Let the scalp rest — avoid tight buns or high ponytails for the first few days.
  • Soothe tenderness with a cool mist and gentle scalp pressure, not scratching.

Every night

  • Wrap with a satin or silk scarf or bonnet, or sleep on a satin pillowcase. Cotton pulls moisture and frays the braid.
  • For long braids, gather them loosely before wrapping so you aren't sleeping on tension.
  • Mist the scalp with a water-based spray, then seal with a few drops of light oil — scalp only, not the length.

Washing braids

  • Every two to three weeks, cleanse the scalp with a diluted shampoo or a scalp cleanser applied directly to the parts.
  • Rinse until the water runs clear, squeeze — never rub — and dry fully with a towel and cool air.
  • Smooth flyaways with a light mousse instead of heavy gel, which builds up and flakes.

Loose curls in bohemian and goddess styles

  • Condition the loose pieces weekly and finger-detangle gently from the ends upward.
  • Refresh curl definition with a water and leave-in mix rather than heat.

When to take them down

  • Most protective braid sets should come out between six and eight weeks; cornrows often need refreshing sooner.
  • Take down early if you see matting at the root, sliding braids or persistent itching.
  • Rest between sets: cleanse, deep condition, trim if needed and let your scalp breathe for a few days.
